WhatsApp to allow people to chat without changing phone numbers

WhatsApp is designed to allow people to chat without revealing their phone numbers – instead exchanging unique usernames.

The platform also announced that it will reach three billion account holders worldwide in the next few months.

Starting Monday, users will start making reservations through the app, though it’s not mandatory.

The company says people can remove or change their username at any time.

Once fully unlocked, WhatsApp users can connect after exchanging usernames. There will still be options to block or report unwanted messages.

Their names will be limited to 35 characters and there will be few restrictions, except for some famous officials and celebrities, their names will not reach anyone else.

So WhatsApp is unlikely to be flooded with users calling themselves Donald Trump.

The Meta-owned firm has defined usernames as a privacy feature.

Alice Newton Rex, head of product at WhatsApp, said she heard from users that they don’t always want to share their phone number with others, especially in group chats.

She hopes the feature will put “users in control of how they appear” on the app.
