President Trump urged Republicans to push the measure through both houses of Congress to sign the deal into law.
Before they passed their version of the bill in February, he told House Republicans: I will not sign anything until this is confirmed.
“It guarantees the middle ages,” he said, referring to November’s congressional elections. “If you don’t get it, big problem, in my opinion.”
Traditionally, the president’s party has underperformed in congressional elections halfway through his term.
While expressing his support for the law, Trump reiterated that the 2020 election was stolen by massive voter fraud.
While cases of small-scale voter fraud have occasionally surfaced in US elections, there has been no evidence of corruption on a scale that would change the outcome of a White House vote.
Members of the president’s party generally support the bill in its original form.
Complicating matters, Trump attached additional provisions.
These include a proposed ban on postal ballots, with some exceptions, such as for the disabled or members of the US military.
But Republicans are not unanimous in their support of the mail-in ban popular in many US states.
Trump added non-election-related reforms to win Republican support.
These include transgender surgery on children and a ban on transgender athletes in women’s sports.
