The Egyptian Football Association has decided to move the friendly match of the Egyptian national team against Russia to the Cairo International Stadium instead of holding it at the “Misr” Stadium in the New Administrative Capital.
The Egyptian national team will host its Russian counterpart on May 28 as part of the final preparation program before participating in the 2026 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.
According to the same local reports, the stadium change was a move aimed at providing a bigger crowd presence and a more enthusiastic atmosphere for the team before they leave for America to complete their World Cup preparations.
The Misr Stadium opened in January 2024 and has only hosted two international matches so far, against Croatia and New Zealand.
The Russian national team is playing its friendly matches despite the ongoing suspension by the International Football Federation (FIFA) over the outbreak of war with Ukraine, as FIFA has accepted some of its recent matches as official international friendlies.
The match comes as part of Egypt’s national team’s preparations for the World Cup after being drawn in Group 7 alongside Belgium, Iran and New Zealand.
The two teams have previously met each other in the previous 7 matches, during which the Russian national team won 6 to the Egyptian national team’s one victory, while the last confrontation was at the 2018 World Cup and ended with a 3-1 victory for Russia.
It is expected that the Egyptian national team will play another friendly match with Brazil in the USA, as part of the final stage of preparation for the World Cup.
