France suffered a major shock in their 2026 World Cup quarter-final clash with Morocco after their captain Kylian Mbappe was forced off the pitch with an injury despite his brilliant performance.
The Paris Saint-Germain star opened the scoring for the Roosters in the second half, before Ousmane Dembele scored the second to give France a valuable 2-0 win over the Atlas Lions.
Despite delighting the French fans with his goal, Mbappe collapsed on the pitch in the 77th minute with an injury, then walked to the center circle and asked coach Didier Deschamps for a substitution.
The French coach quickly responded to the team captain’s request and decided to replace him with his colleague Jean-Philippe Mateta, at a time when the result showed that France had taken the lead with two unanswered goals.

Mbappe left the pitch cautiously under the close watch of medical staff before cameras later showed him putting ice on his leg, prompting concerns in the French camp about his fitness for the next match.
The French forward scored the first goal earlier, in the second half, directly contributing to his country reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.
French fans are waiting for the final medical report to determine the extent of the injury and the length of the player’s absence, especially since the team will face the winner of the Spain-Belgium game in the semi-finals.
Mbappe has been the most important element in France’s front line during the current World Cup campaign after he continued to score and make a difference in key matches, making his possible absence a significant blow to the Roosters’ world title ambitions.
