A women’s futsal match in Brazil turned into a horrific scene of violence last Wednesday when an AS Recinhas player lost control and kicked an opponent twice in the head while he was on the ground, then punched another player who tried to intervene, prompting the Brazilian Futsal Federation to ban him for five years and expel his club from the league.
According to the Brazilian Futsal Federation, the Disciplinary Committee made its decision last Friday to ban the player for five years in addition to excluding AS Recinhas from the Fortaleza Municipal Championship this season, the most severe punishment handed down to a player in the history of Brazilian women’s futsal.
Brutal attack
The horrific incident took place in the second half of Fortaleza’s municipal league opener, with Projeto RDJ Sport Femenino leading 1-0, when a player kicked an opponent twice in the head as he lay on the ground after a foul and then punched another player in the face in an attempt to intervene.
Images circulating showed excessive violence on the field, prompting the referee to immediately stop the match after the attack, and the two victims were taken to hospital for treatment, with preliminary medical reports showing no serious injuries.
Criminal investigation
In addition to the sports punishment, the player is subject to an investigation by the local police of the state of Ceara, where the prosecutor’s office is closely monitoring the investigation so that the player is held accountable for his actions as soon as possible, indicating the possibility of criminal charges against him for assault and battery.
