MeIt’s hard to tell when Marvel’s trailers stopped being fantasy and started taking on their own plot twists, but it may have been when the first images of Spider-Man: No Way Home appeared to show the Lizard gasping for thin air – and the internet correctly pointed to Andrew Garfield’s now-defunct antics. Since then we’ve had Patrick Stewart hinting at Professor X coming to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Wakanda Forever revealing Black Panther’s new suit while denying that Shuri was inside it.
Now it’s happening again with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It is the fourth Amazing A Spidey movie is coming out next month, the internet is abuzz with predictions. “This movie is a real mystery,” Tom Holland told Esquire. “And for a large part of the movie even Spider-Man is a little conflicted and he’s lost and he’s like, ‘What’s going on?’ We’re just trying to find ways to make the movie more like a police movie.”
So what do we think it is? Two trailers have been released so far, revealing that Spider-Man is experiencing a strange transformation, that someone or something seems to be playing musical chairs with human bodies, that the Hulk is back and bigger than ever, and no one knows that Peter Parker is the wall runner due to the spell of Doctor Strange at the end of the last film. However, we are not close to fixing any of them.
The problem is, ever since the three Spider-Men showed up in No Way Home, Marvel has taught us to treat trailers with appropriate skepticism. If there’s just a hint of a shonky frame, small voice, missing eyes or body, we’re there. It doesn’t take much before even the most outrageous rumors are turned into legal evidence by bloggers and YouTubers. Take Sadie Sink, who is cast in an unknown role. Some people think he’s playing a villain with a twisted mind from the trailers, a version of the X-Men’s Jean Gray who was introduced into the Spider-Man movie in the same way that the webslinger was introduced in Captain America: Civil War. But some think she could be Parker’s daughter from another universe, the comic book favorite Mayday Parker, also known as (often) Spider-Girl. Or Rachel Summers, Jean Grey’s daughter who was transported to the future. Or Madelyne Pryor, Jean Grey’s actress. Or Hope Summers, the reformed messiah. Or Shathra, the spider god from an easy angle to use Marvel’s continuity.
Then there’s the Hulk. Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner takes part in the trailer because it seems that the genius and scientist has to explain to Parker why his eyes are turning black and he is shooting a web in his hands like 2001 over and over again. But the rumours, naturally, have moved on. Some fans think this is the long-awaited return of the Savage Hulk, as the trailer shows a bigger, angrier, more house-trained version than we’ve seen in years. Some seem to believe that Marvel has brought him in so that Spider-Man can fight one of the most popular superheroes before he finds a real enemy – perhaps a sleazy human being – crawling around inside the Hulk’s skull like a wasp in a pint glass.
Next: Miles Morales, the rumors about his arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seem to be less based on anything in the trailer than the iron rule that the current Spider-Men movie must be multiplied on the screen like Gremlins caught in the rain. Let’s ignore for a moment that Sony is letting Marvel play with one of the cleanest Spider-Man IPs it still has, which is Miles as the star of his Oscar-winning creation. It would also require another desperate entry into the franchise, where Marvel appeared to be trying to drag Spider-Man back into the street.

Finally there are all the rumors about the villains. Tom Holland says this no one has ever guessed who the real enemy is in Brand New Day. Which, considering the number of people who have tried, seems to be less than J Jonah Jameson’s way back into it. Could it be Jean Grey? Mr. Negative? A bird? Mr. Sinister? Or maybe William Metzger.
It seems that someone out there has already done a lot of planning, just like they did with No Way Home. Unfortunately, there are also 20,000 false rumors, each one well-established and ready to distract everyone until opening night.
