The studio behind hit Michael Jackson biopic Michael has revealed plans for a sequel though the controversy that surrounded the original.
Speaking in a quarterly earnings call reported by VarietyLionsgate motion picture chairman Adam Fogelson said planning for the sequel “continues to go well”.
Fogelson added: “I’d say there’s a lot of fun Michael Jackson story, and many of the biggest and most iconic parts of his music catalog that weren’t touched on in the first film. There are many other events that took place, even during the original movie that were not touched upon, so we are very confident that we have a very interesting movie that will also attract audiences around the world. “
Michael he delivered record-breaking numbers in the US and UK on its release in April, while its total grossed $715.8m (£533.2m) worldwide. The film ends with Jackson performing in 1988 at Wembley Stadium in London, as part of his infamous tour.
However, the production of Michael was complicated by issues related to Jackson’s child abuse allegations, and many scenes were abandoned after the producers realized late that the relationship between Jackson and one of his accusers, Jordan Chandler, meant that Chandler would not appear as a character or be mentioned in the film.
It is unclear whether or not the next step will resolve the child abuse allegations against Jackson, who first appeared in 1993. However, Fogelson said the sequel would not be chronological, saying: “We can go back and forth on this story.” He added that some of the pre-shot footage could be used in the sequel which would help reduce the production cost of the sequel, saying: “We think we have 25 to 30% of the second footage that was already shot from the pre-production, and obviously it will have a (financial) value in the end.”
