Media today revealed new details about the future of Saudi Arabia coach Georgios Donis of Greece following his disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup, amid strong hints that his career at Al-Akhdar is nearing its end.
Saudi Arabia crashed out of the World Cup in the group stage with just two points from three games after draws with Uruguay and Cape Verde and defeats to Spain to finish fourth in Group 8, sparking criticism of the coaching staff.
According to Al Arabiya, Donis’ future has been the subject of debate in the corridors of the Saudi Arabian Football Association even before the clash with Cape Verde, in light of the officials’ belief that the national team needs a change at the technical management level, regardless of the result of the last match.
The channel added that one of the most striking observations made by federation officials about the Greek coach was the lack of a strong personality in dealing with the players, which was reflected in the management of matches and technical decisions, in addition to his failure to impose a clear identity for the national team among his management.
Sources said the Saudi Arabian federation believes the next round requires hiring a coach with a leading personality and more experience in managing teams in preparation for upcoming events, especially the 27th edition of the Gulf Cup and the 2027 Asian Cup.
Former Saudi Al-Nasr coach Jorge Jesus is the most popular candidate to take over after leaving Al-Alami.
