The massive campaign refuses to recognize defeat against Spain
Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain by an unanswered goal has sparked controversy on the streets of Argentina, leading to calls for a replay of the final.
According to the newspaperEl mondoIn Spanish, Argentine fans have launched a campaign through digital platforms to demand a repeat of the World Cup final, and have so far managed to collect more than 61,500 signatures.
Behind this initiative stands Argentinian fan Gisela Sanchez, who started a petition on Change.org questioning the game of Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic and calling on FIFA to review the refereeing decisions made during last Sunday’s game in New York.
The plaintiff claims that the arbitration decisions directly affected the course of the meeting, alleging that there were violations that require review, without providing any documentary evidence to support his allegations.
Despite the public momentum gained by the campaign, it does not have any legal basis to oblige FIFA to change the result of the match, as no official match can be replayed except in exceptional circumstances provided for in the sporting regulations or by decision of the competent bodies of the international federation.
The initiative joins a series of digital protests seen at the 2026 World Cup, where another French campaign, which gathered more than 82,000 signatures, demanded a replay of the semi-final match against Spain over a controversial play leading up to Lamin Yamal’s penalty kick.
Spain won the World Cup after beating Argentina with a clean sheet from Ferran Torres in extra time.
Despite the bitterness of the defeat, tens of thousands of Argentine fans took to the streets of the country after the final whistle to show their support and gratitude to the team after they reached the final and came close to winning the title for the second time in a row.
