‘We survived the wildfires in Spain but our friends lost their lives’


A British family on an overnight holiday has described the “terrifying” experience of escaping Spain’s worst wildfires.

Spanish authorities say 12 people in the village – among them four Britons – have been killed.

Another 23 people are still missing. Lucinda Curtos, who arrived in Spain on Thursday with her partner Riyaz Chetan and their young children, said they were “not expecting to hit a wall of fire”.

Later they found out that some of their close family friends had lost their lives.

“I don’t know why they left their house on foot,” she said. “I can imagine it’s because they live in the countryside because their roads are cut off.”
