Ivy League college students are, by definition, smart. They don’t need using generative AI to cheat exams; they could just learn those things. But they’re also competitive, ambitious, and demanding, so AI can be seen as a shortcut that frees up more time in their lives for things that chatbots can’t do. A a recent study of Princeton students found that 29.9 percent admitted to cheating with AI on at least one exam or assignment. But what happened recently at Brown gives us a good idea of what this kind of cheating looks like in the classroom — and how much it can replace real learning. And we know all this because the blind economics professor at the center of it all, Roberto Serrano, doesn’t allow it.
