Wayne Pivac: Ex-Wales boss comes out of ‘semi-retirement’ to coach Benetton

Pivac has signed a contract with the Italian club as first team head coach until June 2028, with an option for two more seasons.

“After Japan, we came back to New Zealand with just a scene of semi-retirement,” Pivac said.

“I’ve been helping local clubs with coaching coaches and recruiting out of school, identifying young talent, which I’ve enjoyed doing.

“I told my agent it had to be something special and a few clubs popped up that weren’t interested.

“Then came the phone call that Benetton was interested in having a conversation.

“We did it quickly, one zoom led to another and before you know it we decided to accept an offer, so there we go.”

Pivac brought in the former Scarlets and Wales fly-half Reese Patchell As his attacking coach.

“I know Reese very well and he’s got a great work ethic,” Pivac said.

“We signed him from Cardiff and he was a big part of us winning the championship with the Scarlets in 2017 and it was a special time in Welsh regional rugby.

“He understood the way we wanted to play and was able to execute what we wanted on the field and in training.”

Pivac believes that the pair will improve each other despite the 30-year age gap.

“He’s going to be a very good coach,” Pivac said. “I know the people at Benetton are excited about the one and only signing I’ve made to date, which is Rice.

“I look forward to helping him start his coaching career.

“For a young coach to be with an older veteran coach, it’s a win-win.

“She’ll keep me young and hopefully I’ll help her relax and enjoy the trying moments for what it is.”
