WATCH: BBC confronts people-smuggler as he tracks them down


Criminal Twana Jamal, once described as the “godfather” of French refugee camps, is believed to be living in Leicestershire and about to seek asylum, a BBC investigation has revealed.

In addition, law enforcement officials have told us that another 15 convicted smugglers are living in the UK under false names, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current border controls in tracking asylum seekers who have committed serious crimes abroad.

The Home Office told the BBC: “All asylum seekers are subject to mandatory security checks to verify their identity for immigration, security and criminal checks” and that the UK “has a number of agreements with countries to exchange criminal record information”, adding that immigration enforcement is at an all-time high.
