Warriors comes to Broadway with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda | Theater

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis’ musical based on The Warriors, the cult novel and film about New York’s gangs, will be a Broadway hit next year.

The album, Warriorswas released in the year 2024 and followed the history of a Coney Island family back in the Bronx after being framed for the murder of the leader of the city’s largest gang. The original story was written by Sol Yurick, whose 1965 novel was inspired by Xenophon’s epic Anabasis, and was made into a film by Walter Hill in 1979.

Miranda told the Guardian at the album’s release that the stage version would be “great joy“Now, the Warriors will line the house, the Lunt-Fontanne theater, for the spring opener.” Andy Blankenbuehler, who scored Miranda’s score for Hamilton, will direct alongside Jenny Koons, and will also shoot the show.

“There’s one line on the album that’s also in the lyrics, which is ‘What do you do when they kill everything you believe in?'” Davis said. in an interview with the New York Times the second. “And I think that’s a question that we’re all grappling with in this world.” Davis and Miranda said the show will have about 20 people and have a book rather than a musical.

The two conspired to create a special group of 26 songs including Lauryn Hill, Marc Anthony, Shenseea and many other multi-genre singers. Each of New York’s five boroughs is represented by top musicians including Nas and Busta Rhymes on the opening number, Survive the Night. It’s the kind of list that can be done on an album but not night after night on stage. “We invited these amazing artists that we wouldn’t have had on eight shows a week,” Davis told the Guardian in 2024.

The cast of the show has yet to be announced. In the story of Miranda and Davis changed gender, the Seven Warriors are all women, who were sung on the album by Kenita Miller, Sasha Hutchings, Phillipa Soo, Aneesa Folds, Amber Gray, Gizel Jiménez, Jasmine Cephas Jones, many of them Hamilton alumni, while Julia Harriit, their new Mercy. The lead singer of the story, Luther, who is known to taunt the Warriors by telling them to “come out and play”, is performed by Australian metalcore singer Kim Dracula on the album.

Miranda’s Hamilton is over Broadway since 2015. He is directing Dave Malloy’s musical film Octet starring Rachel Zegler and Amanda Seyfried.
