Daniel DuBois survived his first bout after dethroning Fabio Wardley in the 11th round of a stunning heavyweight classic to become the two-time world champion.
Wardley landed a right hand and floored the Englishman early and dropped him again in the third, before Dubois regrouped and responded with wave after wave of heavy shots.
The Ipswich fighter, with a bruised nose and a swollen eye, staggered around the ring but somehow managed to stay on his feet and keep firing back.
As the contest moved into uncomfortable territory, the referee finally saw enough and stopped the fight. A shocked Wardley dropped to his knees as Dubois celebrated holding the WBO heavyweight title.
Dubois, 28, silenced his critics with a clinical display of power in his 23rd professional victory and established himself at the top of the division.
Wardley, 31, lost for the first time in 22 fights – a fighter famous for hitting the fairytale road from the unlicensed white-collar circuit.
With the takedown power stacked on both sides, the fight lived up to its ‘no blackout’ tagline, with announcer Frank Warren confirming there was a replay clause.
