Wirz began his football career at youth club SV Grün-Weiss Brauweiler between 2008 and 2010 before moving to the Köln academy, then joining Bayer Leverkusen in January 2020 to begin his professional journey in the first team.

The Reds star made his Bundesliga debut on 18 May 2020 in an away match against Werder Bremen and scored his first league goal on 6 June 2020 against Bayern Munich in the 89th minute, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history at the time at the age of 34 days and 17 years.

The player suffered a serious injury, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, on 13 March 2022 against Köln, which ruled him out for the rest of the 2021–22 season, before returning on 22 January 2023 against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

During his career with Bayer Leverkusen until his transfer in June 2025, he made 140 Bundesliga appearances, scoring 35 goals, and 14 German Cup appearances, scoring 4 goals, in addition to 42 European appearances, scoring 18 goals, taking his total appearances for the club to 197.

The 2023–24 season was the most notable of his career for the club, as he made 32 appearances in the Bundesliga, scoring 11 goals and 11 assists, taking his total to 49 in all competitions, scoring 18 goals.

Wirz played a key role in Leverkusen winning the Bundesliga title for the first time in the club’s history with an unbeaten season (2023–2024), in addition to winning the German Cup, and he was also awarded the Bundesliga Player of the Year award at the time.

On 20 June 2025, Wirz moved to Liverpool in a record deal worth around €150 million (including add-ons and bonuses). Although his start with the Reds was very lackluster, he managed to regain his luster in the later stages of the season.

During the 2025-26 season, the German made 33 Premier League appearances for the English side, scoring 5 goals and providing 3 assists, in addition to 4 FA Cup appearances, in which he scored one goal, and 11 Champions League appearances, in which he also scored.

At international level, Wirtz made his debut for Germany on 2 September 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein, and scored his first international goal on 23 March 2024 in a friendly against France, just 7 seconds into the match.

In total, Wirtz represented the German national team in 41 matches, during which he scored 11 goals.

The former Leverkusen player took part in UEFA Euro 2024, scoring the opening goal against Scotland (5-1). He also scored the equalizer in the 89th minute of the quarter-final against Spain, which ended with Germany losing (1–2) after extra time.
