“Volvo vehicles have been granted a license from the Office of Information and Communications Technology and Services under the ‘Securing the Information and Communications Technology and Services Supply Chain: Connected Vehicles’ law in the United States,” the company said.
“Under the ruling, Volvo Car USA had to go through a process with the US Department of Commerce to get permission to continue importing and selling connected cars in the US,” Volvo said. “This work is being carried out in accordance with the process, and the granting of the informed consent follows constructive discussions with the US Department of Commerce and other US authorities regarding Volvo Cars’ management, technology, and data protection.”
Polestar, which is part of Volvo and it is also affected by the Commercial lawit told Ars that it “will continue to work with U.S. officials to meet the announced requirements.”
Now that Volvo has shown that it is possible for an OEM to successfully convince the Department of Commerce to comply with the new connected car law, it brings the possibility that some Chinese EVs, which is growing in interest among US car buyersmay still enter the US market in the coming years.
