The eldest daughter of Foo Fighters’ Dave, Violet fronted the rare Nirvana reunion is only 13 years old – her clear voice that makes her more symbolic than family love.
While it’s true that his father paired him with producer Justin Raisen (Kim Gordon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sky Ferreira) on this debut album, and his dirty songs weren’t tested in the sticky bars that music like this usually requires, Grohl is incredibly vocal about his role. “Judge for yourselves if I am worthy,” He told forty-five.
Cool Buzz, loud and snotty, makes for a compelling story. Light ska-inspired guitar work à la No Doubt collides with hard-hitting drums worthy of a spinning pit as Grohl struggles with narrow-mindedness. The slow-burner Usually Some burns, bitter and bitter, while Mobile Star has a Lynchian strangeness that shows off the edge of Grohl’s voice. But for the most part, Desire to Be Sweet to Me is more reverent, more predictable: the shredding guitar on The Last Day I Loved You and the tape-deck fizz on Plastic Couch come off like makeup, not actual war paint. Grohl is a real talent, but his hungry threats need sharp teeth.
