Spanish football federation president Rafael Lauzan reignited the row over the identity of the host country for the 2030 World Cup finals after he sent a sharp message to Morocco, insisting Spain is leading the organization of the historic edition of the tournament, refusing to question that role.

Morocco, Spain and Portugal will co-host the 2030 World Cup finals, but the race to host the final is still open, with Spain insisting the final be played at the Santiago Bernabeu, while Morocco is seeking the new Hassan II stadium in Casablanca.

He said in the announcements Portuguese newspaper A BolaLausanne expressed his displeasure at reports that Morocco had a strong chance of hosting the final, saying: “I sometimes get angry when I see Spain leading this World Cup, the Centenary World Cup, and then there are doubts about this. There should be no doubt about Spain’s role.”

He added: “It is not good that the common cause is weakened by talking about such issues,” referring to the controversy surrounding the stadium hosting the final match.

The Spanish federation president also expressed his frustration at the timing of the Morocco dossier, saying it came on the day Spain and Morocco played two matches at the 2026 World Cup, which he said had reignited media competition over the tournament’s final.

Despite the heated controversy, Lausanne confirmed his confidence in his country’s position, stressing that Spain has a leading role in the joint project, and said in a strong message:

The Spanish FA president’s comments come as speculation mounts over the stadium to host the 2030 World Cup finals, as FIFA has yet to settle the matter despite an ongoing rivalry between Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu and Casablanca’s upcoming Hassan II Stadium.
