The final word in the clash of champions is determined by penalty kicks

Paris Saint-Germain continued their golden history on the European continent and retained their Champions League title for the second successive season by defeating Arsenal in a thrilling final that ended in a 1-1 draw after regular time and extra time before the French side eventually leveled the encounter 4-3 on penalties.

Not only did Luis Enrique’s men prove that winning last season was no fluke, they cemented their position among the continent’s elite clubs, making Paris only the second team in the modern era to retain the trophy from Real Madrid and cementing themselves as a European power capable of imposing their dominance year after year.

Early shocker… Havertz strikes at the first opportunity

Arsenal came into the game strongly and put early pressure on the Paris defense before turning their advantage into a lead in the fifth minute.

The goal came after Marquinhos’ attempted clearance deflected off Leandro Trossard and the ball found its way to Kai Havertz, who raced into the area and fired a powerful shot from a tight angle into the roof of the net to give his side the best possible start to the final.

 

Paris Saint-Germain looked to respond quickly and came close to threatening David Raya’s goal in the 12th minute when Hvicha Kvaratskhilia pounced on the ball, but Gabriel’s perfect save in the last minute ended the danger.

Things got off to a quick start when the referee handed out the first yellow card against Cristian Mosquera in the 46th minute for time-wasting, before Bukayo Saka was cautioned again in the 54th minute for a heavy tackle on Desiree Doue.

The French side continued to dominate the ball and continually tried to penetrate Arsenal’s defense with active movements from Achraf Hakimi, Hvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele, but the English team remained united despite the continued pressure.

 

Penalty penalty. Paris is coming back to life

The turning point came in the 62nd minute when Kvaratskhelia managed to advance into the box, taking advantage of a defensive breakdown, before being fouled at the back by Mosquera. The match opened up further and both teams began to trade attacks as the showdown approached its decisive phase. Dembele almost scored Paris Saint-Germain’s second goal in the 72nd minute before Vitignan responded with a powerful effort that went over the bar in the 73rd minute.

Arsenal, on the other hand, came close to restoring the lead after just a minute when Saka almost capitalized on the ball inside the box, but goalkeeper Matvey Safonov got out in time to end the danger. Paris squandered a valuable chance in the 78th minute when Kvaratskhelia’s volley from the left flank deflected off the crossbar after Louis-Skell’s intervention, the French’s most dangerous chance to equalise.

Arteta made new substitutions in the 83rd minute, bringing on Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke for Trossard and Saca, and Luis Enrique brought on Bradley Barcula for Quaratzkhelia.

Paris, on the other hand, threatened David Raya’s goal on more than one occasion, especially when the keeper saved a dangerous chance after Barcola’s cross and Dowie’s header in the 107th minute.
