The referee upheld his decision after reviewing the video technology
Today, Tuesday, the technical committee of referees of the Spanish Football Federation published its opinion regarding the controversial refereeing situation of the La Liga match between “Barcelona” and “Real Betis”.
“Barcelona” defeated “Real Betis” (3-1)Sunday evening at the “Camp Nou” stadium, within the framework of the 37th round of the Spanish Championship.
The first two goals for the Catalan team were scored by Brazilian Rafinha in the 28th and 62nd minutes, and Joao Cancelo scored in the 74th minute.
On the other hand, substitute Isco scored the only goal of “Real Betis” from the penalty spot in the 69th minute.
But, according to AS newspaper, the committee reprimanded the referee for awarding a penalty that should not have been awarded.
The referee initially saw a penalty after Gavi brought down Isco, but the VAR disagreed with that view, however, after reviewing the shot, the referee upheld his decision.
“The forward started his fall after hitting the ground with his foot, and this action caused the Betis player to lose his balance without any clear foul by the defender or any other action deserving of a penalty.” The VAR was therefore right to recommend the review and the referee should have overturned his original decision and restarted play after stopping the match.
