A goal decides the match
Mexico continued their perfect start to the 2026 World Cup after Raul Jimenez scored his country’s second goal in the tournament’s opening match against South Africa.
The goal came after the Mexican team imposed their control over the course of the match from the opening minutes, benefiting from the high morale that accompanied the home team’s strong start.
Jimenez couldn’t contain himself after hitting the net as he broke down in tears, touched by the historic moment and his first ever World Cup goal, amid loud celebrations from his teammates and the Mexican fans in the stands.
Mexico opened the scoring early through Julián Quiñones, who wrote his name in the history of the tournament after scoring the first goal of the World Cup 2026 in the 9th minute of the game, taking advantage of a fatal mistake by South African goalkeeper Williams.
Mexico are drawn in Group A, which also includes South Korea, the Czech Republic and South Africa, as they look to get off to a strong start that will see them close to qualifying for the knockout stages.
