Switzerland striker Brielle Embolo made World Cup history for her country after scoring against Qatar on Saturday night in the opening campaign of both teams at the 2026 World Cup.
The two teams will play in the second group with Canada (host) and Bosnia and Herzegovina, who were tied with one goal each earlier.
While the authenticity of Embolo’s goal sparked controversy as the Swiss strikers were believed to be offside before the penalty was awarded, the Cameroonian’s signature goal put him in a historic position.
According to the Opta Network, “Brill Embolo is the sixth player in Swiss national team history to score in more than one World Cup game (after scoring at the World Cup in Qatar), surpassed only by Xherdan Shaqiri, who has scored in three different games.”
He added that, like Embolo, “Andre Abeglen, Blerim Dzemaili, Jacques Fatone and Granit Xhaka have also scored in two different editions of the World Cup before.”
According to Mr. Chip Stats, “Brel Embolo became the third player in history to score his first three World Cup goals against teams from Africa, Europe and Asia, after;
Colombia’s James Rodriguez against Ivory Coast, Greece and Japan.
Russian Artem Dzyuba against Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Spain.
As for Embolo, his three goals came at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups against Cameroon, Serbia and then Qatar today.
The match ended with Qatar drawing with Switzerland with one goal apiece as Enteja Khokhi Bualem scored for Annabi in the 95th + 5th minute.
