Iran and New Zealand drew 2-2 in the first round of Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, escalating the conflict in the group that also includes Egypt and Belgium.
The Iranian national team came into the game strongly and applied pressure on all lines, but their New Zealand counterpart caught them by surprise and managed to open the scoring early through Elaya in the seventh minute when he took advantage of Chris Wood’s perfect pass and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.
The Iranian side tried to get back into the game with several attacking attempts, most notably Mehdi Taremi’s shot that hit the post, before Ramin Rezayan managed to equalize in the 32nd minute with a rebound in the penalty area.
In the second half, New Zealand got back on the scoresheet after Elijah Just scored his second goal of his own in the 54th minute, following a fresh pass from captain Chris Wood.
The Iranian team refused to give up and kept the pressure on in search of a comeback, and Mohammad Mohebbi was able to equalize with a perfect header in the 64th minute after a special pass from Ramin Rezayan.
The match witnessed a lot of excitement in its final minutes with both teams trying to steal the winning ball, but the result remained the same until the final whistle.
With this result, Iran and New Zealand earned one point each, equaling Egypt and Belgium, who also drew 1-1 in the same round.
All teams in Group Seven now have one point after the first round, increasing the importance of the upcoming fixtures in the race to qualify for the second round of the 2026 World Cup.
