Egypt star Rami Rabia has defended his compatriot Omar Marmoush after the criticism he faced following his poor performances during the World Cup.
The Egyptian national team reached the eighth finals of the 2026 World Cup, narrowly losing to Argentina, 2-3.
Rabia said during his speech on the MBC Masr satellite channel that Marmoush is a great player, explaining that big stars like Mohamed Salah and Marmoush are always under the close watch of opponents because they can make a difference at any time.
He added that it is not appropriate to accuse Marmush of being selfish, stressing that a great player sometimes has to be individualistic on the pitch because he has solutions and confidence that help him decide on opportunities.
Rabia said he spoke to Marmoush before the Australia game, noting that the Manchester City star discussed technical instructions with him and what he needed to do on the pitch, reflecting the amount of responsibility he feels for Egypt despite the pressure that can sometimes push him to make the wrong decisions.
He emphasized that the presence of Omar Marmoush on the field gives Egypt great offensive power, referring to the Iran match, where some of the opponents admitted that they struggled a lot to stop the “City” star.
Rabia concluded his remarks by stressing that any big star is always in the spotlight and that Marmoush is always looking to help the Egyptian national team, but the immense pressure he is under can sometimes make him miss seemingly easy opportunities.
