The two soccer legends may meet in the quarterfinals
After the victory over Uzbekistan, the captain of the Portuguese national team, Cristiano Ronaldo, commented on the possibility of a meeting with his Argentinian rival, Lionel Messi, at the 2026 World Cup.
Ronaldo led Portugal to a 5-0 win over UzbekistanDuring the meeting between them, today, Tuesday, at the Houston Stadium, in the second round of the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After the match, the Portuguese star was in the press box to make some announcements and was asked about the possibility of facing Messi at the World Cup.
Ronaldo said in the statements reported by ESPN. “I don’t know what to answer. This is not a very important question, but, well, it would be nice.”
He added: “The most important thing today was to win in order to qualify and prepare for the next one. We have a tough match against Colombia, but the main goal was to go through the group stage and we did it.”
Portugal and Argentina could meet in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup if both manage to top their groups, which seems close to happening.
If this happens, it will be the first match in which Messi meets Ronaldo in the history of World Cups, as the two teams have never met each other in the tournament.
