An interesting case in Brazil
A controversial incident took place in Corinthians’ match against Vasco da Gama in the twelfth round of the Brazilian Under-20 League after a Corinthians player assaulted the referee after being sent off.
The match ended in a 1-0 win for Vasco da Gama, handing Corinthians their fourth defeat of the season in the Brazilian youth league after five wins and three draws, leaving them eighth in the table with 18 points.
In stoppage time in the first half, Corinthians’ Luis Gustavo Baia received a second yellow card after interfering with Samuel, so match referee Gustavo Alencar Rodríguez decided to show him a red card in the face.
Television footage showed intense anger towards the sent-off player, who strongly objected to the referee’s decision before chest-pushing the referee amid attempts by his teammates to contain and calm the situation.
Despite leaving the pitch, Luis Gustavo Baia continued his angry protest against the refereeing staff in a scene that was widely shared on social media.
While leaving the field, the player angrily said: “This is a farce,” before addressing the referee, saying: “Are you kidding me, there are no children here?” His colleague Caragua quickly intervened and put his hand over his mouth in an attempt to silence him and prevent the situation from escalating.
After the match, the Brazilian player was quick to issue an official apology for his behavior through a statement published on his Instagram account, in which he confirmed that he took full responsibility for what he did to the referee.
“Unfortunately, my team and I suffered a refereeing injustice, but nothing justifies my behavior towards the referee and I take full responsibility for my behavior…
