French star Kylian Mbappe’s romantic trip to the Italian island of Sardinia sparked outrage among Real Madrid fans when he appeared with Spanish actress Esther Exposito in videos that went viral on social media as he recovers from a muscle injury that threatened his participation in the crucial El Clasico.
The journey from Paris to Sardinia is controversial
In hours of widely circulated footage, 26-year-old Mbappe can be seen walking around the Sardinian city of Cagliari in sunglasses, a crisp white shirt and black shorts, making no attempt to hide, accompanied by Spanish star Exposito.
Before leaving for Italy, Mbappe had already appeared in the French capital Paris with the Spanish actress in a romantic trip that did not go unnoticed by Royal fans who expressed their strong displeasure with the actions of their highest paid star.
Injury threatens his participation in El Clasico
Mbappe is currently sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury in Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Real Betis on April 24.
The muscle strain will see La Liga’s top scorer miss Espanyol’s clash with Barcelona on Sunday night, while his status remains uncertain for the El Clasico clash against Barcelona on May 10, which could see the arch-rivals crowned.
Mass public outrage
Angry comments from Real Madrid fans took to social media platforms, with many calling Mbappé’s behavior irresponsible and unprofessional at a very important time the team is going through.
One of the fans wrote on the “X” platform: “While his teammates struggle at a crucial stage of the season, the team’s highest-paid player doesn’t care at all. This is a shame.”
“You’re injured, you leave your teammates suffering and you’re supposed to rest to recover as quickly as possible, then go to Cagliari to celebrate with Ester Exposito. This is unacceptable. Zero intelligence, zero professionalism.”
Some fans went further as one of them demanded that the French star’s contract with the club be terminated immediately, saying: “This player does not deserve to wear the jersey of Real Madrid.
A disastrous season for the Royals
This crisis comes at a very sensitive time for Real, who are experiencing one of their worst seasons in recent years. Real Madrid are 11 points adrift of rivals Barcelona at the top of the Spanish league after their disappointing exit from the Champions League, where the Catalan side can be crowned champions this week if they beat Getafe.
Mbappe’s behavior is seen as a further blow to the morale of the team and fans, especially after the French star joined Real last summer amid high expectations that he would lead the team to titles, but his first season in the Spanish capital has so far failed to live up to that level of ambition.
