Zamalek’s goalkeeper talks about saving a penalty in the Ceramica Cleopatra match
Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad has responded to allegations on social media by agreeing with former Whites star Ahmed Belhaj and current Keramika Cleopatra to take the penalty in the Egyptian Premier League clash between the two teams.
Zamalek secured a valuable 1-0 win over Ceramica Cleopatra yesterday, Wednesday evening, to clinch the Egyptian league title for the 15th time in their history, knowing that a draw was enough for them.
Awad converted Belhaj’s penalty, but the strike sparked controversy as a number of social media followers claimed the Moroccan gestured to the goalkeeper to help him save the shot as he is a former White Castle player.
Awad told MBC Misr 2 after the match. “If we focus on what’s being said on social media, we won’t be playing football.”
He added: “Whoever wants to succeed in any field should stay away from everything that is said on social networks.”
The goalkeeper continued. “Now any success is subject to accusations. Last year people also claimed that I was complicit with The Pyramid and that is not true. Everyone is vulnerable to making mistakes.”
Awad wanted to congratulate Zamalek fans after winning the league title, saying: “Congratulations to Zamalek fans who deserve to be happy. After God, they are the cause of victory. They have supported us since the start of the season and deserve the title. We apologize for losing the Confederation title.”
