The Mexican star scores his first World Cup goal
Mexican forward Julián Quiñones opened the scoring records for the 2026 World Cup when he scored a superb goal for his country against South Africa in the opening game of the tournament, setting the sights for the new edition of the World Cup with a strong and exciting start that grabbed attention from the opening minutes.
Mexico are in the first group of the tournament, alongside South Korea, the Czech Republic and South Africa, in a group that looks relatively balanced but poses very early challenges for all participating teams.
Quiñones’ goal came quickly after just nine minutes when South African keeper Williams made a fatal error with the ball and it went the wrong way to one of the defenders before the Mexican striker was able to read the shot very smartly.
Quiñones quickly grabbed the ball and raced towards the goal, then fired a powerful rocket into the net with no chance of a block, lighting up the stands and giving Mexico an early lead in the opener.
The goal was not only an assist, but also about the player’s mental and physical preparation and ability to capitalize on the opponent’s mistakes as quickly as possible, which gave the Mexican team an ideal start to the tournament and raised the tempo of the game from the start.

The feat comes just hours after Quiñones was crowned the best player in the fan vote at the latest edition of the Roche Pro League, confirming the high value the player has enjoyed of late, especially after the high levels he has produced.
Quiñones also managed to finish last season as the top scorer in the Roshen League with 33 goals, one goal ahead of Al-Ahly striker Ivan Toni of England in a goal-scoring race until the final rounds of the league.
The goal was the third of his international career in 23 appearances for Mexico and his first ever World Cup goal, getting his World Cup career off to the best start and thrusting himself into the spotlight early on in the current edition of the tournament.
