Mbappe’s injury mars Roosters’ win
France qualified for the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup with a 2-0 win over their Moroccan counterparts in their quarter-final tie, as the Roosters repeated their lead over the Atlas Lions despite the World Cup qualifiers in a game that saw two goals. he scored a penalty for Kylian Mbappé, who suffered a disturbing injury. The French side continued to dominate with back-to-back tries from Desiree Douay and Ousmane Dembele, while the Moroccan side settled for a few counter-attacks that posed no real threat to Mike Mainian’s goal.
The most famous strike came in the 25th minute when Argentinian referee Facundo Tio awarded France a penalty after Nouser Mazraoui was fouled by Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe took the lead from the penalty spot in the 28th minute, but Yassine Bounou continued his brilliance after he foresaw a right-hand corner and brilliantly blocked the ball to preserve the tie and give Morocco plenty to cheer about.

Despite Atlas Lions’ tenacity, France kept up the pressure and almost took the lead before the end of the first half after Lucas Deane’s powerful shot hit the post to end the first half in a goalless draw.
The French side’s dominance continued early in the second half until Kylian Mbappe was able to unravel Morocco’s defense in the 60th minute after he took advantage of a set attack to fire a powerful ball into the back of the net to give his country the lead.

Mohamed Webby responded by making several substitutions, bringing on Sufyan Rahimi and Sufyan Amrabati, then Jassim Yassin and Zakaria Al-Wahidi in search of a comeback, but the French side continued to impose their control on the match.
In the 66th minute, the ball reached Ousmane Dembele, who ran to the edge of the penalty area and shot towards the goal, and the ball entered the net, heralding the second goal of the French.

The match also saw Issa Diop booked and Didier Deschamps had to replace Kylian Mbappe in the 77th minute after picking up an injury. Jean-Philippe Mateta took his place, and Bradley Barcola was brought in for Desiree Douet.
In the final minutes, the Moroccan team tried to get back into the game, and in the 83rd minute they almost reduced the difference when Azedin Ounah sent a powerful ball from outside the penalty area, but Mike Mainian shone and blocked it brilliantly.
A minute later, Nael El Ainaoui’s header from Ashraf Hakimi’s corner hit the bar.

At the other end, the French side continued to threaten on goal as Yassin Bounu made a one-on-one save from Bradley Barcola in the 88th minute, before Jean-Philippe Maté wasted a clear chance with a header that went over the bar from a corner.
Despite six minutes of stoppage time, the result remained unchanged and the referee blew the final whistle to declare France 2-0 winners and through to the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to captain Kylian Mbappe’s injury.
