The Catalan team will not be able to reach the centenary
Barcelona were unable to continue their dream of breaking the 100-point barrier in the Spanish league with an unanswered goal at Alaves, despite the special reception the Catalan side received in the Corridor of Honor after being officially crowned in La Liga matchday 35.
The result left Barcelona’s balance frozen at 91 points with two rounds of La Liga to go, meaning the maximum they can achieve is just 97 points, falling short of the 100-point feat achieved under late coach Tito Vilanova in 2013.
Meanwhile, “Alavés” increased its score to 40 points, occupying the 15th place.
Barcelona came into the game early on with repeated attempts to penetrate the Alaves defense and Marcus Rashford almost opened the scoring early on, hitting the post in the 8th minute, before Ronny Bargi wasted another chance for the Catalan side.
Despite Barcelona having up to 73% of possession in parts of the first half, Alaves looked more dangerous in goal, taking advantage of rebounds and space behind the defense as goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny got the better of him on more than one occasion to save his side from certain goals, notably against Ibrahim Diabate and Nahuel Tenalya.
With the first half seemingly settled for a draw, Alaves managed to strike in stoppage time after Ibrahim Diabate met the ball in the box and slotted home to give the home side a clean sheet.

Barcelona tried to come back in the second half and made several attacking changes, notably with Pedri, Ferran Torres and Joao Cancelo, but the team lacked attacking efficiency in the light of the Alaves defense and goalkeeper Antonio Severa.
Barcelona’s attempts continued until the final minutes, to no avail, and then the referee blew the final whistle to secure a valuable victory for Alaves, who gave the La Liga champions a pre-match pass before denying their dream of finishing a historic season with 100 points.
