The first European title in the history of the English club
England’s Crystal Palace won the European Conference League title after beating Spain’s Rayo Vallecano 1-0 at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, Germany on Wednesday.
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal of the match in the 51st minute after Adam Wharton’s shot deflected off Vallecano keeper Augusto Batalla and the French striker found the net with one touch.
Crystal Palace controlled most of the match and threatened the Spaniards’ goal with more than one dangerous ball, but they settled for one goal, which was enough to win the title of European champion.
The Conference League marks the first European title in Crystal Palace’s history, enabling them to qualify for next season’s Europa League, pending a decision by the European Union.
Crystal Palace were eligible for this season’s Europa League after winning the FA Cup last season, but UEFA decided to exclude them due to “joint club ownership” rules.
American businessman John Textor owns shares in Crystal Palace and is also the majority owner of French side Olympique Lyonnais, so the latter received a Europa League qualification card (due to their position in the French league) and the English club went to the Conference League.
Thus, English clubs continue to dominate the European Conference League title as 3 clubs have won the title (West Ham, Chelsea and Crystal Palace) from the 5 games that have started in the 2021-2022 season.
It is also the English side’s second European title of the season, with Aston Villa taking the Europa League title, while Premier League dominance could be complete if Arsenal win the Champions League next Saturday when they face reigning champions PSG.
Austrian manager Oliver Glasner bids farewell to his Crystal Palace side in the best possible way after winning three titles with the club – the FA Cup and the Community Shield in 2025, in addition to the Conference League.
Glasner announced his departure from “Crystal Palace” at the end of the current season, looking for a new challenge in his coaching career.
