Today, Saturday, Switzerland won their first ever World Cup penalty and converted it against Qatar in the first round of the Group Two tournament at Levi’s Stadium in California, USA.

Striker Briel Embolo successfully completed the penalty kick in the 17th minute with a perfect shot to the right of Annabi’s goalkeeper Mahmoud Abu Nada.

The first penalty of the 2026 World Cup sparked a refereeing dispute over whether it was offside until Qatar’s goalkeeper prevented it.

Switzerland and Qatar play in the second group of the World Cup, which also includes Bosnia and Herzegovina and co-host Canada.

In the first match of the group, Canada drew with Bosnia (1-1), and the European team took the lead on goal difference, before the hosts equalized the score.
