Morocco do it and keep going… a thrilling and breathtaking showdown
The Moroccan national team qualified for the eighth finals of the 2026 World Cup by defeating the Netherlands (1-1) on penalties (3-2) in the framework of the 32nd round of the tournament today, early Tuesday, after playing a draw in regular and extra time (3-2) at the Monterrey stadium in Mexico.
Holland took the lead first in the 72nd minute through Liverpool star Cody Jacobo. But Morocco refused to give in and Issa Diop equalized in the 90+1 minute.pushing the match into two extra periods, then penalty kicks that put the Atlas Lions on the smile.
With this victory, the Atlas Lions battalion continues its journey and prepares to face Canada in the quarter-finals after the hosts defeated South Africa (1-0).
The first half was mostly balanced between the two teams with possession trading, but the highlight came in the 18th minute when Achraf Hakimi took a corner from the right and Nael El Ainoui rose to head it powerfully past goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
A few seconds later, the ball reached Ashraf Hakim on the edge of the Dutch penalty area, and he launched a rocket that the Dutch goalkeeper struggled to keep away from his goal.
Moroccan goalkeeper Yassin Bounou responded brilliantly for Verbruggen, brilliantly stopping Dutch defender Miki van de Ven’s powerful shot in the 44th minute.
At the start of the second half, the Moroccan team were clearly active and in full control of the ball, with the Dutch players retreating significantly to face the onslaught of the Atlas Lions.
In the 52nd minute, Hakimi received a wonderful pass from his counterpart Azedi Ounahi, bursting into the penalty area and fired a rocket over the post amid heart-rending cheers from the Moroccan fans in the stands.
Minutes later, Hakimi received another long pass and found himself alone on goal, but Dutch defender Van de Ven saved his goal at the last minute, preventing the Saint-Germain star.
In contrast to the course of the match, Cody Jacobo scored a goal for the Dutch national team in the 72nd minute. From a long ball it went to Summerville, who struggled past it after collapsing with Nusair Mazraoui, and the Liverpool star found the net with one touch.
After the update, Mohamed Wehbi completed Anas Salah El-Din, Jassim Yassin, Samir Al-Murabit, Sufyan Rahimi and Shams Al-Din Talebi.
Indeed, the Moroccan team got the breakthrough in the 90th + 1 minute through Issa Diop, who stepped forward to use his headers, and he did rise in front of Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk on one of the balls to head substitute Shamseddin Talebi.
In the first half of extra time, Morocco continued to dominate as the Windmills retreated and Sofiane Rahimi wasted an incredible chance after receiving a pass in the box, dribbling and shooting the ball into a miraculous save by the Dutch keeper.
The second extra half saw no serious attacks on goal, with players from both teams taking a physical toll after hard work throughout the match, which went all the way to penalties.
Sofiane Rahimi, Chams Edin Talebi and Ismail Sibari scored for Morocco in the penalty shootout, while Nael El Ainoui and Ashraf Hakim scored.
On the other hand, Kupminers and Vigorst scored for Holland, while Kluivert, Timber and Summerville missed.
