Sunderland write the dream… and Brighton fall at the crucial moment
In the thirty-seventh round of the English Premier League, “Leeds United” scored a decisive victory over Brighton with an unanswered goal at Elland Road on Sunday evening, complicating Brighton’s calculations to qualify for the European Championship next season.
Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal of the game in the sixth minute of stoppage time, capitalizing on an errant back pass to brilliantly round goalkeeper Bart Verbruchen before slotting the ball into the net to give Leeds fans a dramatic victory in the dying minutes.
Leeds increased their tally to 47 points to move up to thirteenth place, while Brighton’s tally froze on 53 points in seventh place, a position now under serious threat ahead of the final round of the season.
Although Brighton dominated most of the match and failed to capitalize on 19 attempts on goal, the team paid the price for squandering chances, while Leeds’ first shot at goal was a fatal shot.
Sunderland are closing in on a historic European dream
Elsewhere, Sunderland continued their exceptional season with a valuable 3-1 win over Everton to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for a major European tournament for the first time since the 1970s.
The Black Cats, who returned to the Premier League last season via the promotion play-off at Wembley, have enjoyed a superb season under manager Regis Le Brie and are one step away from writing a new historic chapter by returning the Stadium of Light to a European atmosphere.
The team are now one step away from finishing the season in one of the European qualification spots, in a story that has been regarded as one of the most remarkable surprises of England’s season.
Brentford are clinging to their European dream
At home, Brentford came back from twice behind to draw 2-2 with Crystal Palace to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for next season’s European Championship.
Dango Ouattara scored both goals for Brentford with the second just two minutes from time after he headed in a cross to rescue a valuable point for his side.
Crystal Palace opened the scoring early on through Ismaila Sarr from the penalty awarded after a return to video technology, before Ouattara strangely equalized after the ball hit him in the face and turned into the net.
In the second half, Adam Wharton restored the visitors’ advantage with a low shot that goalkeeper Kehler made a mistake, but Ouattara came back to grab the score in the end.
With this draw, Brentford remained in the European competition, and “Crystal Palace” continued its fluctuating series of results in the league.
Fulham lose their European hope against Wolverhampton
In another encounter, Fulham suffered a heavy blow in the European qualification race as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Matthews Mane scored for Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final home game before relegation to the First Division, but Fulham equalized through Robinson with a penalty awarded after video interference.
Although Fulham dominated possession for most of the game, Wolverhampton were the most dangerous in attack and missed more than one chance to decide the match, most notably Yerson Mosquera’s header and Adam Armstrong’s shot hitting the post.
With this result, “Fulham” practically stayed away from the European positions, after the difference between them and “Brentford” in eighth place increased.
