An unexpected blow for Guardiola’s team
Everton suffered a dramatic 3-3 draw at home to Manchester City in the Premier League on Monday night in a clash that had serious implications for their title race and European qualification hopes.
City missed the chance to close the gap with leaders Arsenal and with 71 points they are now in second place, 5 points behind Arsenal.
On the other hand, manager David Moyes’ side finished tenth on 48 points, level with ninth-placed Chelsea and lost a valuable chance of progressing in the race for European seats after leading by three to two goals going into the final moments.
Manchester City went into the game as the clear favorites to win, based on a string of strong results and an unbeaten record against Everton in recent years, and looking to tighten the ring on leaders Arsenal.
On the other hand, “Everton” played the match under the pressure of the need to compensate after two painful losses, with a clear ambition to get closer to the European qualification places.
Jeremy Doku opened the scoring for City with a perfect strike just before the end of the first half (43rd minute) after continued pressure from manager Pep Guardiola’s side, who looked the more dominant side in the first half.
But the match turned upside down in the second half as Tierno Bari capitalized on Guehi’s defensive error to equalize in the 68th minute, before Jake O’Brien headed home the second goal from a corner (73rd minute), amid protests from City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Everton kept up the pressure and Barry scored the third goal (81st minute), taking advantage of a new defensive confusion that put the hosts in a relatively comfortable position before the final minutes.
Erling Haaland quickly reduced the difference by scoring the second goal (83rd minute) after a pass from Mateo Kovacic.
The final minutes saw a lot of tension, with several cautions and substitutions from both sides, as City tried to apply all the pressure until they were able to level the scores again in the 90+7th minute through Doku.
