England’s Jordan Henderson suffered a serious wrist injury during Sunday night’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 and was taken to hospital on a stretcher after falling painfully on the advertising boards at the Azteca Stadium.
German coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed the seriousness of the injury in his statements after the game, saying: “It’s not good. Jordan fell and hurt his wrist. The injury appears to be very serious. It’s a very serious injury.”
A painful fall
The freak injury happened shortly after the final whistle of the game, with England’s players celebrating their victory behind the goal in front of the fans and singing ‘Wonderwall’ and trying to jump over the advertising hoardings, Henderson went down in pain after his team-mate Dan Byrne managed to get over the barrier.
Television replays showed the terrifying moment of the fall, which required the immediate intervention of a medical team, as the players formed a safety chain around their injured colleague.
Henderson’s teammates looked on with great concern before he was taken on a stretcher to the locker room on an oxygen machine and then rushed to the hospital.
Captain Harry Kane commented on the incident in a hoarse voice, saying: “Jordan Henderson fell there. I think he’s fine,” but Tuchel’s subsequent statements confirmed the seriousness of the situation.
Second injury
Henderson’s injury wasn’t the only one to spoil the night, as Mexico striker Santi Jimenez also left the pitch on a stretcher after suffering a horrific injury at half-time and was taken to hospital for tests.
Mexican coach Javier Aguirre revealed. “We have to examine Santi because he is now in hospital,” referring to the seriousness of the injury to the Milan striker, who came on as a substitute in the 61st minute.
