The US Geological Survey says the death toll is ‘probable’ after the powerful earthquakes that hit South America.

Venezuela has been hit by a series of powerful earthquakes, collapsing buildings in the capital Caracas, and causing fears of many deaths.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck near San Felipe, about 284km (176 miles) west of Caracas, at 22:04 GMT on Wednesday, followed immediately by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake near Yumare, about 293km (182 miles) west of the Geological capital, the US said.

The US scientific body said that serious injuries and serious damage are “possible”.
