Like the simple desks of the brand, the Align chair has a deceptive simplicity with few parts. The chair required less than 15 minutes and only three screws to assemble, using the Allen wrench that came in the box. (Although the QR code, on the seat that was released in March, didn’t link to the appropriate link for the conference instructions, I usually don’t need them.)
Simplicity comes mainly from the decision to reduce the components of the seat: the cushion above the wheels and casters is a single mesh cable high up with a suspension system that allows generous leaning.
The seat sheet says that one can recline about 20 degrees, but I found that there is a lot of play for my large frame: I can recline as close as 45 degrees and still have enough support and no discomfort. This creates a lot of room for stretching.

Even though the chair is made from a few parts, Vari was able to control it surprisingly well. The seat can be moved about four inches up and down, moved forward and backward, and the lumbar support can be tilted to your liking using a five-position ratchet on the back of the seat. The results aren’t dramatic, but they are based on different pressures on the lower back.
The armrests can also be folded in or out and moved forward or backward, although this position cannot be locked. If you like to play, you may find yourself playing with the armrests during idle time. The seat cushions are also slightly curved, and although I didn’t feel comfortable, those who like to feel comfortable can look elsewhere.
Note that although the armrests can be rotated, their width cannot be changed. The seat cushion is also on the wider side, about 20 inches across. This means that even if the chair has a large frame, those who are very small can find a place to rest very far away. I loved the back support, as a tall and tall man. But little people will feel like they’re swimming in the chair, with its 27-inch high back.
Overall, I was impressed with the simplicity of the seat, which has a positive impact on the cost reduction. This perfect mix of breathability, support, value, and customization makes the Align a great contender in the mid-range price range—and the integrated head represents a big step up from the company’s Vari Task Chair. My one concern about the Align is that I will fall asleep in it.
