The Steam Machine is a cool little console that’s as powerful as the PlayStation 5, according to my friend Sean Hollister’s. critical analysis. But one part that lags behind is its old AMD FSR upscaler: It’s not as good as it should be. Yes, it can upscale low resolution graphics to make games look higher, but the PS5 (especially PS5 Pro) give a clear picture with the other games we compared.
That’s not good news for the Steam Machine, especially since it’s starting at $1,049 for the 512GB model — a higher price than anyone expected. But there is hope that gaming on the console will look better in the future. Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffis said Seaside that it works with AMD to deliver Image of FSR4its latest package of tools to upgrade and improve performance, to the Steam Machine.
In an email, Valve adds that FSR 4 is “coming soon” but that it “can’t say much about when.” This is encouraging to hear, since the last time we heard in the “don’t-want-it” scenario, AMD’s chance to bring FSR 4 to devices with integrated RDNA3 GPUs (like the Steam Machine) was. a little dark.
The FSR 4 has a lot of enhancements that change the way cooperative games work with advanced motion graphics (including AI-assisted frame creation), which will hopefully give the Steam Machine a definite edge over the six-year-old, $650 Sony. Valve tells us that “It should offer significant improvements in image quality.”
