The 10-man team of the United States (USA) jumped into the next round of the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, ending a 24-year wait to win in the knockout stage to keep alive the hope of the American dream of running in the world showpiece.
In a thrilling game in the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday, Folarin Balogun scored at halftime but was subbed off after halftime. Malik Tillman then added to the lead eight minutes from time with a free kick.
It was a physical encounter where luck was not always on the strikers’ side, with Balogun and Christian Pulisic having goals disallowed, and Balogun sent off for a seemingly accidental foul on Tarik Muharemovic.

The Americans entered the game with a series of attacks on the territory of Bosnia, motivated by the repeated chants of “USA” and —a mob that came with high hopes.
USA delivered fast and hard, Pulisic back in the group and determined to make his mark, Balogun a constant threat, with Weston McKennie and Tillman showing good form.
The victory ended the USA’s 10-game losing streak against European opponents, and set up a last-16 tie in Seattle with Belgium, who scored two goals to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time.
