US Women’s Open: Nellie Korda admits ‘it wasn’t a great day’ as Se Young set early pace in first round at Kim Rivera Country Club | golf news

Nellie Korda admitted she was surprised by how poorly she played when she opened her US Women’s Open challenge with a two-over 73.

The world No. 1 has finished no worse than tied-eighth in 10 of his last 11 global starts, but following his Chevron Championship success at Riviera Country Club needs some work if he wants to make it back-to-back big wins.

Korda, who started on the 10th, looked on track with a birdie at the 11th but followed it up with back-to-back bogeys at the 12th and 13th.

A second birdie at the first moved the American back into par but further bogeys at the third and seventh saw him slip off the leaderboard.

“Honestly I hit it pretty bad off the tee,” said the 27-year-old, who finished second behind Maja Starc at last year’s US Women’s Open.

“I found myself in a lot of trouble on the wrong side of many of these pins. I felt like I was grinding to make safe purses.”

“It wasn’t a great day. I hit it really well Monday through Wednesday, so I can’t really say where it came from. I’m going to go to the range.

“I just feel like I’m stuck in my swing and can’t release it. I was sending it to Cincinnati (at the Kroger Queen City Championship). I’ve put in a lot of hours on the range, and I just can’t seem to get it out.”

Korda finished six shots behind early pacesetter Se Young Kim of South Korea, whose four-under 67 he started and finished with three consecutive birdies at the 10th and 11th and then the sixth on his ‘back nine’.

Kim, the 2020 Women’s PGA Championship winner, is one ahead of compatriots Hyunjo Yu and Ina Yun and Mexico’s Gabby Lopez, who was six under after 10 holes before slipping away with three bogeys.

England’s Lottie Wood Corder matched the score with 73, while Ireland’s Leona Maguire battled back with 76 from five overs.
