US Treasury Secretary confirms banknote plans with Trump’s face | Donald Trump News

The proposed $250 bill will be the first time a living person has appeared on US currency in more than a century.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says he is preparing to print a new $250 bill with the face of President Donald Trump, lawmakers to decide whether the money will be issued.

US law prohibits any living person from appearing on US currency, but a law was passed last year to create an exception to allow current and former presidents to appear.

Speaking at the White House on Thursday, Bessent said designs were prepared in anticipation of legislative changes.

“Right now, there is legislation that is proposed – before the House, before the Senate – to change the first requirement for a living person, Donald J Trump, to be at $250,” said Bessent.

Bessent made the comments after The Washington Post reported that Treasurer Brandon Beach, a Trump appointee, has been pushing the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to accelerate the process of a new coin commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

“I don’t think there’s any problem with having the president of the United States, the person who is the president of the United States, on the 250th anniversary bill,” Bessent told reporters.

A photo taken by The Washington Post showed the words “America 250 anniversary”, acknowledging the US declaration of independence on July 4, 1776.

The Treasury Department did not immediately respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.

The characteristics of dictators, kings

A coin bearing Trump’s face would be the latest example of a US president expanding his brand in office since he returns to the White House in 2025.

Posters bearing Trump’s image have been hung at the Justice Department and other government buildings.

And his list of nominees for the Kennedy Center governing body he added his name to the gymnasium, which Congress originally designated as a memorial to the assassination of President John F Kennedy.

Trump’s signature has been reset appear on US currency as part of plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary, the first for a sitting president.

US banknotes have until now been signed by the secretary of the Treasury and the treasurer.

In March, the US Commission of Fine Arts, led by Trump’s nominee Rodney Mims Cook Jr, approved the creation of a. commemorative gold coin with a portrait of the Republican President.

The announcement, which relied on the legalization of commemorative coins, sparked criticism from critics, who compared the move to the behavior of dictators and monarchs.
