The US Central Command has said that new attacks on Iran are planned to undermine Iran’s ability to block the Strait of Hormuz.

The attacks took place early on Sunday, hitting Sirik at 1:30am local time (22:00 GMT, Saturday), and Qeshm Island at 3:38am (00:08 GMT, Sunday) and at 6:10am (0240 GMT) according to Iranian reports.

Tasnim also said that the US military was searching the area near Shadegan in Iran’s Khuzestan province at 5:55am (02:25GMT Sunday).

Reports say there were no casualties and that residential and commercial buildings were not damaged in the attack.

In a post on X, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that the US military launched new strikes “designed to destroy Iran’s ability to threaten merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz”.

The news added that the strike was in retaliation for an Iranian missile and drone attack on a US base in Jordan that killed two US service members on Friday.

Since the fighting began in February, 16 US service members have been killed and more than 430 wounded.

Tasnim news agency said there were reports of explosions in Qom, Arak and Behbahan which were later denied by the authorities.

The governor of Arak said “it is very good and at the moment we have not heard of any attacks or explosions”.

Iran strikes back

The Tasnim news agency reported that the Iranian military was targeting US military equipment at two locations in Kuwait.

A statement from the Iranian military said, “In response to the repeated attacks of the enemy”, the army is fighting “the US weapons depot in the Al-Adiri camp and the Patriot radar and the aircraft radar” at the Ali Al Salem base in Kuwait.

“Unforgettable Lessons”

Before the latest US strikes, Iran’s top leader warned of “unforgettable lessons” if the US continues to attack Iran.

Initially, the war focused on the control of the Strait of Hormuz. But the US protests have now expanded to include civilian infrastructure, including bridges and drinking water desalination plants.

State-run news agency IRNA said the Bonji desalination plant was destroyed, cutting off water to about 10,000 people, and that the desalination plant on Qeshm Island inside the strait was damaged.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told state television that the US was violating the terms of the deal in the interim and “will not do it again”.

Iranian officials say at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in US airstrikes over the past three weeks.

Late on Saturday, Iran’s ambassador to India named two girls – Sogand Dardmand and Fatemeh Zahra Akbari – who were among the seven killed in the US strike in Bandar Khamir in southern Iran, which took place on Thursday.

Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi, from Tehran, said the past eight nights of US airstrikes in Iran had caused “anger” and “frustration” among the people.

“People don’t really know if they will see the continuation of this conflict, or how long it will take, and if there is a possibility of diplomatic cooperation to solve all these problems and find a lasting solution”, he said.
