US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has passed away after a brief and sudden illness.
His office issued a statement that he died on Saturday evening. “Senator Graham’s family would appreciate prayers and privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”
In the year Elected to the Senate in 2002, the South Carolina politician has been one of Washington’s most influential voices on foreign policy and a key Trump ally.
He returned from Kiev and met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. There were no known health problems prior to travel.
US President Donald Trump took to social media to comment on the senator’s death, saying Graham was a “true American patriot”.
Graham served as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.
US support was a strong supporter of Ukraine. “Putin will not stop in Ukraine,” he told the BBC in 2023.
“Being weak in Ukraine means you lose in Taiwan,” he said.
During a recent trip to Ukraine, Graham was working on a version of the Russia sanctions bill that he said would “give this war to President Trump.”
Over the years, Graham has clashed with President Trump, but has become one of his staunchest supporters.
He He told the BBC in 2023.“There’s a dark side to Donald Trump…he’s been a great president. But I’m stuck with him because I’ve seen what he’s done,” he said, citing Trump’s record on the US southern border, the assassination of Iran’s Qassem Soleimani and the appointment of conservative judges.
