A Republican senator who defected from his party to vote in favor of US President Donald Trump contested cases his first time facing a big problem in his home in Louisiana.
Bill Cassidy’s primary on Thursday was seen as a way to confirm Trump’s continued dominance of the Republican Party. Although the polls have shown the approval of the President, the preliminary polls have shown continue to gain weight his acceptance comes.

Trump endorsed US representative Julia Letlow in the Senate race. State Treasurer John Fleming is also running. The winner of the Republican primary is almost guaranteed to win the general election in a heavily red state.
Cassidy joined seven Republicans in the Senate in voting to impeach Trump for “incitement to terrorism”, following his campaign to change the results of the 2020 election and the attack by his supporters on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
“Our laws and our country are more important than any person. I voted to impeach President Trump because he is guilty,” Cassidy said in a statement at the time.
Despite the Republican minority, the jury fell short of the two-thirds vote needed to convict Trump of the charges, in which he was acquitted.
Initially seen as a political threat after he left office in 2021, Trump made a remarkable comeback in the years that followed, reshaping the Republican Party to match him.
This includes the rise of many lawmakers who accept Trump’s claims that the 2020 vote was rigged, for which he has provided no evidence.
Meanwhile, many other Republican senators who voted to impeach Trump along with Cassidy have been removed from office or elected to resign.
Among the group, only Republicans Susan Collins from Maine, who continues to be seen as a defense against her Democratic opponents, and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska, who faced Trump’s opponent in 2022, escaped their votes.
Letlow, the superintendent of education who entered office in 2021, also took Cassidy’s vote in 2021, saying in his campaign launch video that Louisiana residents “shouldn’t have to wonder how our senator will vote under pressure.”
A good line
Cassidy, a physician, has walked a fine line during Trump’s second term, consistently promoting the administration’s initiatives and appearing with Trump at the White House several times at health-related events and signing bills.
However, Cassidy has had high-profile conflicts with the Trump administration. Time Robert F. Kennedy JrAfter Cassidy was confirmed to be Secretary of Health and Human Services, he broke with Kennedy over vaccine skepticism.
“I’m a doctor who has seen people die from vaccine-preventable diseases, and when I see epidemics increasing, and people dying from vaccine-preventable diseases, especially children, it seems sad,” he said during the hearing.
Cassidy later voted to confirm Kennedy after receiving assurances that he would not change the federal vaccine policy. HHS under Kennedy has changed that view.
In April of this year, Trump criticized Cassidy for appointing him to replace Surgeon General Casey Means, who has been criticized for his skepticism about vaccines and uncertain health opinions.
Trump criticized what he called Cassidy’s “non-political game”. In the following statement, he declared that Republicans will “vote Bill Cassidy OUT OF OFFICE in the upcoming Republican Primary!”
Cassidy, in turn, said that Letlow’s accuser has no real facts.
He also highlighted his past support for various academic initiatives, which he has rejected, and his attendance at the 2023 United Nations climate change conference.
Trump’s power?
Trump carried Louisiana in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections with about 58 percent of the vote, and in 2024 with 60 percent.
As of early polls, the president’s national approval rating has plummeted, down from 34 percent in late April. This comes amid growing discontent over the US-Israel war over Iran and its economic problems.
Trump has maintained strong support among Republicans, but has also seen support among independents.
Polls show Cassidy trailing behind Letlow and Fleming. If no one wins a majority, the race will end on June 27.
Thursday’s race comes amid a national battle to prevent a split in Congress.
With the Louisiana House of Representatives primary scheduled for Thursday, Governor Jeff Landry has temporarily suspended the vote.
This happened after the United States Supreme Court struck down the Voting Rights Act, which paved the way for the Republican-controlled Congress to redraw its congressional map to eliminate one of the two black districts.
Human rights groups filed a lawsuit alleging the suspension violates US and federal law.
