The case underscored how U.S. prosecutors are increasingly questioning the role of parents in school shootings. Elder Gray was absent on September 4, 2024 at Apalachee High School in Georgia, but he gave his 14-year-old son the gun he used to kill two students and two teachers.
Who was killed including Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14 years old, as well as 39-year-old teacher Richard Aspinwall and 53-year-old teacher Cristina Irimie. A teacher and eight other students were also injured.
Because Colt Gray pleaded guilty to murder, he faces life in prison. His trial should begin in mid-October.
Before accepting the plea, Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm asked Gray a series of questions to make sure the young man knew the consequences of his plea and was entering voluntarily.
To each question, Gray replied: “Yes, your honor.”
Breanna Schermerhorn, whose son Mason was killed, told the judge she never forgave the 16-year-old suspect.
He said the authorities in Cole’s life missed several warnings, but caught him making the final decision with the shooting.
“The decision was his and his alone,” he said.
“Mason deserved a future, and we all deserved a future with Mason in it, and Colt took it from Mason and everyone he loved,” he said.
In Colin Gray’s case, investigators said he knew his son was suffering from mental illness and mood swings, but he didn’t seek help.
Colt Gray’s mother, Marcee Gray, testified that she encouraged Colin Gray to secure his weapons and prevent her son from accessing them.
Following the attack, investigators found a shrine in Colt Gray’s bedroom to Nikolas Cruz, the 2018 mass shooter at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, prosecutors said.
The US, where laws protect the right to “bear arms”, has a high rate of school shootings.
So far this year, there have been 64 incidents on school grounds, including shootings that occurred outside of school hours, according to the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.
This has resulted in 24 deaths and 32 injuries.
