Wyndham Clark held off a final-round charge from world number one Scotty Scheffler and Sam Burns to close out wire-to-wire US Open victories with a one-shot win at Shinnecock Hills.
The 2023 champion saw a six-shot overnight advantage cut to just one on an intriguing major final day, with Barnes threatening the biggest final round comeback in US Open history and Scheffler in contention to complete the career Grand Slam.
Clark faltered on a front-nine 38 and failed to regain control of the tournament in the closing stretch, a stunning birdie at the closing 16th canceled out by a three-putt bogey to leave him just one up for a game.
The American missed the fairway on the last four but found the green with his approach, then two-putted from 50 feet to finish a final round 73 and secure his second major win in four years.
Clark ended the week on four under and one ahead of Burns, who started seven days behind but charged to a runner-up finish after a three-under 67, Tom Kim was third at one under ahead of world number one Scheffler, Keith Mitchell and JT Poston.
Barnes – playing three teams ahead of the overnight leaders – fired his approach into tap-in range early and added another birdie at the third, which saw him move to within four of the lead when Clarke failed to get up and down to save par at the second.
The momentum continued Barnes’ way with a 25-foot birdie at the fifth and another from about 50 feet at the eighth, as Clark holed from 15 feet to save par at the fourth but saw a chip roll to him en route to a bogey at the next.
Burns fell behind when he bogeyed the ninth but got himself back within one when Clarke missed from four feet at the seventh, with the overnight leader then having to make a sensational up-and-down to bogey the ninth for a lead at the turn.
Clark opened his back nine with a close-range birdie but bogeyed the par-four 13th, while Barnes responded to missing from four feet to save Samar at the 15th by making a key birdie at the next to get back to three under.
Barnes temporarily parried his birdie attempt on the 17th and sank to his knees after seeing his effort at the last, as Clark – who received boos from the New York crowd – doubled his lead on the 16th with a hole-in-one from 25 feet.
Clarke gave Barnes hope when he three-putted the 17th for bogey from 70 feet and then put himself back in three-putt territory at the end, where he backed off his birdie attempt at kick-in range before tapping in to claim the $4.5 million first prize.
“It (the win) feels pretty amazing,” Clarke said. “I played some ugly golf the last two days but my putter and short game kept me in it. Everything I did was amazing.”
Kim posted a level-par 70 on his 24th birthday and tied for third, one of only three players to end the week, while Scheffler mixed two birdies with three bogeys to miss out on completing a career Grand Slam on his 30th birthday.
England’s Tyrell Hatton shared seventh place with Gary Woodland, Sam Stevens and Sam Stevens at one over. Joaquin Niemann – who carded 11 on the par-four sixth after a misconduct penalty in his first roundThe likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Aaron Rae, John Parry, Sahit Thigala and Xander Schaffel all finished the week at two over.
Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 champion, faded over the weekend with rounds of 74 and 73, while Rory McIlroy’s bid for his second major of the season saw him finish tied for 32nd at six over.
