Scotty Scheffler was dropped for another slow start to the tournament after falling short in his first attempt to complete a career Grand Slam at the US Open.
Scheffler was the pre-tournament favorite to complete the missing major needed to become the seventh man to complete the Grand Slam, only to lose ground immediately with an opening-round 72 at Shinnecock Hills.
The world number one was eight strokes behind first-round leader Wyndham Clarke but rallied with rounds of 68 and 69 over the next two days to secure Sunday’s pairing with Clarke, then went on to move to within three of the lead with five holes to play.
Scheffler was unable to push further as he bogeyed the 14th and finished at even-par to end the week with four pars, four behind Clarke, meaning Scheffler would have to wait at least another year for a Grand Slam.
“It was good to be back on the court,” Scheffler said after a final round of 71. “I felt like I was on the outside looking in at times this year. I felt like I gave up a lot of shots earlier in the week.
“I haven’t had many 36-hole leads this year. I haven’t had any 54-hole leads. This week will be another instance where you can chalk it up to the first round.
“Wyndham came out late in the day on Thursday and shot me six shots under two over in the morning – that’s eight shots right there. I don’t know exactly what it is.
“I’ve been pretty good in the first round for the past few years, and for some reason, I wasn’t sharp early in the tournament. I didn’t have the lead I needed to win the tournament.”
Scheffler was showered with “Happy Birthday” cheers throughout the afternoon as he celebrated his 30th birthday on Father’s Day, while an encouraging performance produced his fifth top-four finish in his last seven global starts.
“It’s been a battle all week,” Scheffler admitted. “The golf course was challenging. I felt I did some good things. I felt there were things I could have improved. I felt close again – it’s little things here and there.
“I felt like I did enough to have a really good round. I felt like I hit a lot of good putts that were really close to going in, but I just couldn’t hole them. I made one (putt) on 10 and felt some momentum, then hit a lot of good putts down the stretch that just didn’t drop.”
Clark was jeered by a section of the crowd during the final round of his wire-to-wire victory, with Scheffler believing his playing partner got “a little too much”.
“The crowd was tough today,” Scheffler said. “New Yorkers, they’re tough people. There was a good turnout from the fans. You like to see the fans cheering for you. I think sometimes it can get a little too much when the balls are going green and you start hearing the cheers.
“But at the end of the day, I can’t control the behavior of the fans. Being on the field is not for everyone: I’ve had crowds for me in my career; I’ve had significant crowds against me in my career.
“I think it shows a lot about Wyndham, how he not only runs this golf course but I think today’s crowd as well and is a worthy champion.”
The PGA Tour moves to TPC River Highlands in Connecticut for the Travelers Championship, the latest signature event and starts Thursday, where Scheffler won in 2024.
Both events will be live on Sky Sports Golf from Thursday, with the final men’s major of the year – the Open at Royal Birkdale – from July 16-19. Get Sky Sports or Flow without any contract.
